Photography Information Tips for Photographers
Assisting a professional photographer in a studio is an invaluable educational experience. If you are just starting out, I strongly recommend that you spend as much time as a photographic assistant in a commercial studio as possible. When you approach a photographer about working for him her, you need to be honest about your skill level. If you are a student with some photography skills such as basic lighting, digital cameras, or general camera capabilities, you may be able to find an internship with a photographer who will let you work one or two days a week while you are in school.
If you have little or no experience, you can still try to get into a studio to see what the photographer is shooting and to ask a few questions. In large markets, most professional photo studios have a studio manager in charge of running the studio for a photographer. This person helps prepare for shoots. helps set up lighting and sets, orders and monitors supplies, and takes care of numerous other matters to ensure that the business runs smoothly. Other opportunities for being an assistant at these studios include the positions of first assistant and second assistant, in which you would work for the studio manager and photographer.
